Jesus pronounces many woes in Matthew 23 to those who claim to see but are leading people astray. The woes are not only applicable to the spiritual leaders, but to everyone who pretends to be something they are not and fool people by their religiosity. How we love to make an example of the Pharisees, but fail to phari“see” our own pharisaical moments.

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.

27 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.”

Matthew 23:25-28

By evidence and example, the Roman Catholic Church leaders are the modern-day Pharisees. Countless sexual abuse cases are being swept under the rug by those who “shepherd” the flock as they corrupt the most vulnerable- children. The spiritual fathers have taken a vow of poverty and yet are living in the mother lode of opulence.

To be a true follower of Jesus Christ, the entire chapter is a caution that we must walk the talk.
