Light, Life And Its Highs & Lows

The highlight of the day was visiting the lighthouse

It was the day before my brother left that we ventured out to Newport. Someone told my husband about this place awhile back, but in our almost 3 years in OR, we never went there until Saturday. It’s only about 20 plus miles away from Lincoln City, a place we frequently visit, but there’s always an appointed time for everything. Our time in Newport was brief but it gave us a promise.

From that day on, it will become one of our go-to places whenever someone visits us. It’s almost a two-hour drive to get there but it’s worth it.

Cloudy on the other side

The way to the lighthouse was a scene reminiscent of Hawaii. We were situated high up on a mountain overlooking the Pacific ocean.

The seals are chillin’. It was such a beautiful day.

It was the only day my husband could fully spend with us during my brother’s entire visit. It turned out that my husband’s workplace was also relocating on the same days my brother was here. His workplace used to only be a mile away from where we live and he always came home for lunch to be with us. With 9 hours of work, add 3 more to that. There’s 8 hours of sleep time and whatever’s left is what he gets to spend with us on a daily basis.

I see waves on the horizon. Things always happen to challenge our comfort zone and no one is exempt. This relocation is a sad thing for my family. We don’t know if we will also have to relocate closer to his workplace to cut his commute. Salem, the city of Peace has become our home. My son was expressing his sadness at the thought of moving again when he’s just beginning to know people at his youth group better. There’s “kicking and screaming” going on coming from everyone, but whatever God wants to bring about, His will prevails.

The person at the very middle is my son. The 2 people to the right are my husband and daughter. I stayed behind with my brother.

The Lighthouse

The lighthouse is a strategic structure set by the edge of a stable rock. This rock endures as it constantly gets battered by strong waves that beat against it during stormy weather. In the darkness of the night, the lighthouse illuminates and everyone who are on boats and ships, near and far can see that land and safe harbor is near. To be a lighthouse on a hill… What a metaphor and it applies to ALL those who profess to follow Jesus.

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.”

Matthew 5:14

We are expected to be a light especially to those who are weary at heart. There is consolation to those on stormy seas upon the sight of a lighthouse. It is the Light that resides within the believer that draws people.

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

John 8:12

The darkness comes much more than we would want it to but this is such a trustworthy promise from the Lord to cling to. May you shine brightly even as the dark clouds of life’s  circumstances attempt to snuff your light out.
