The Burden Of Waiting

Rarely does it ever occur where we sow seeds and expect to see something happen overnight. Most seeds are encased in a hard shell which takes time to soften for the new life inside to burst out into the open. Some takes a week to germinate, some two and other seeds just don’t even sprout at all. Besides that, more time is needed for it to blossom into a beautiful flower or a fruit-bearing tree.

It’s been almost three weeks since I decided to plant. The packet on the back gives me the duration of maturity and yet, I am wishing it matures quicker than what is projected. See how impatient I am? I water and care for it every single day yet I find that not all of what was planted is going to make it. Normally, thinning/culling is recommended in plant propagation but I wanted to skip that since I dream of seeing all of the seeds bud into beautiful towering sunflowers but I learn this fact of life is unavoidable when it comes to planting, not my desire, but it happens due to elements out of my control. I started with close to twenty and now, I am left with eleven, if even, since pests are daily feasting on my seedlings. What remains standing have holes and I’m hoping it still keeps growing despite the fact they’re mostly chewed out (see ’em here). As I watered the plants and see one broken, I find myself talking to the plant and telling it to defy the odds.

Have you planted your faith on something? Praying to God for something specific like healing, a loved one to come to Christ, a spouse, a house, to be able to conceive etc. and still not seeing it come to fruition? I may never walk in your shoes but there is a universality in waiting and though varying in degree, we all feel the same emotions. Your waiting may be accompanied with pain, bitterness, loneliness, and brokenness and our propensity is to bypass the wait. Who wants to wait?

Can we hasten a plant to grow? We could try. It takes time and the right season. But when we manipulate things and try to speed up the process when it is not time, it often produces something that is unnatural, like a seedling growing taller than it’s supposed to, with weak, long and thin stems that cannot withstand the harshness of the elements when it’s time for transplanting.

Likewise, God is growing you and this process can be long and often painful with plenty of lessons to be learned in stages. Whatever it is you are praying and hoping for, may God grant it to you without delay.
