Wayside Christianity

Flowers on the wayside

“And as he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds came and devoured them.”

Matthew 13:4

The parable is talking about seeds which did not land on good soil and clearly did not develop any root. They were out in the open and they got devoured. While wayside flowers apparently grow without any special care, they look beautiful and are worthy of everyone’s admiration.

God created all people. It is established that He desires for everyone to come to the knowledge of the truth.

“And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.”

Matthew 24:14

My family drove by a church in the city we live in. We passed this landmark so many times but it was only yesterday that I saw this sign. I had to ask my husband to drive around to take a good look at it again.

This sign makes it a sad depiction of the wayside seeds, the one exposed with no roots. It is interesting how outward good intentions can persuade people that they have the love of Christ, but this church’s abandonment of sound doctrine shows us their true condition (Matthew 10:38, 1 John 5:3). We do not change the gospel for the culture. It is the gospel that changes the culture and this is why there is a move to quash biblical Christianity.

“Reverence my sanctuary.”

The reverend had every good intention to build this church. It is heartbreaking to see his efforts for Christ undermined by those who choose to abandon sound doctrine for doctrine that does not revere God’s sanctuary, but rather defile it.

They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.”

1 John 2:19

If you are currently attending a church affirming a lifestyle of rebellion, it is time to find one that truly reveres God’s sanctuary.

“Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them.”

Luke 8:18

  1. We are having a hard time finding a church in our area 😔

    1. Sorry to hear that. When we used to live in FL, we attended a church that was 30-40 minutes away from us. Here in OR, we attended a church near us but we ended up going to the first one we visited when we first moved here. I hope your family will find one soon.

  2. I can see the Pastor’s willingness to reach out. Hopefully once inside he preaches the cold hard truth of the gospel and not to itching ears.

    1. The Methodist church is one of the denominations who openly affirm the LGBT. This isn’t an isolated case. Even though I already knew this (though it was my first time seeing this at this particular location), it was still saddening to see that a church claiming to be Christian stands in solidarity with those who blatantly shake their fists at God, hence PRIDE.

It’s easy to assume other people don’t try to reach out to the LGBT community but even they already have this preconceived notion about bible-abiding Christians telling them off. People tend to forget that converted Christians know what a life entrenched in sin is about before they came to Christ and that we would only like to share His transforming power to break those chains.

In the end, it’s all about people’s willingness to shatter preconceived notions. However, a church that dances to the drumbeat of the culture will eventually end up becoming one with it. (James 4:4). Today’s verse also happens to be good to meditate on regarding this- James 1:21.
