Up In Smoke

The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 22 The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. 23 But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

Matthew 13:20-23 NIV

Every person is inducted into a certain religious system because that’s what they were born into. As we grow old, we encounter beliefs and philosophies that challenge what we currently hold. Traumatic events and witnessing evil in the world also adds to the stress.

When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. – If your Christianity is borrowed and what I mean by this is that you think you know Jesus because you were born into a denomination that claims to be Christian without truly committing your life to Jesus Christ, it is only a matter of time that what you think you hold to will be taken from you. It is not surprising that some people can easily disavow their Christian affiliation—and this wording is intentional because what they had was a religious belief/teaching that they never truly owned to begin with.

“Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them.”

Luke 8:18 NIV

If we’re not firmly grounded in Jesus Christ and His teachings through His Word (any other way only leads us astray), everything we thought we had will surely go up in smoke.
